The Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Performance Optimization and Tuning Handbook Review by Jose A. Campo
9 years later, still valid, still one of the best MS-SQL perf. tuning books
I love reading, and reading about my career is of course one of my favorites topics. So, I was alone at home and this one was the random book I just grabbed from my book-shelve. When I saw the cover, I immediatly remembered that was one of my favorites when I bought it, almost 9 years ago. I was initiating my DBA career at that time and had way much less experience than the one I have today.
9 years later with much more experience and several MS-SQL and Microsoft certifications under my belt, I can confirm this book is still a valid one and provides an invaluable information about how Indexes can improve performance and how easy is to improve query response time with the proper T-SQL optimization and good understanding of MS-SQL engine.
Yes, lot of syntax has changed, hey! we do have MS-SQL 2008 R2 edition at this moment, but the clarity, simplicity and main objectives still apply to today's MS-SQL 2005/2008 boxes. You can even extrapolate some of the concepts into the MySQL and Oracle arena, for instance the Index chapter.
My favorites chapters are #3 and #4, which covers Indexes and Query Optimization. 90% of MS-SQL, Oracle, MySQL query performance issues are Index related. Clear understanding of these topics will make you a better DBA and give you the tuning skills you need for the day to day activities required for your job.
I don't understand why I never posted a good review about this book before but I love it! Has a very well deserved space on my book-shelve at my home office and I'm so glad I can re-read and enjoy its lessons one more time, again.
I miss Ken England in the MS-SQL2008 arena. Wish he can writes a similar book like this one for MS-SQL 2008 engine. It won't be so thin in pages but plenty of easy to read explanations for sure.
This book is a classic. Just be aware of the new MS-SQL 2008 changes and enjoy the lecture of this SQL performance tuning masterpiece.
