ITIL
ITIL was previously an acronym for The Information Technology Infrastructure Library, although it is now treated as a name in itself. ITIL is a set of best-practice publications for IT service management (ITSM). ITIL gives detailed descriptions of a number of important IT practices and provides comprehensive checklists, tasks and procedures that any IT organization can tailor to its needs. It is intend to be used in an 'adopt and adapt' method, with individuals and organizations utilising the elements of guidance which are useful, changing them to suit their specific needs, and apply the parts which are appropriate. ITIL is not a standard which can be complied with; it is offered as "a set of best-practice publications for IT service management". ITIL is published in a series of books, each of which covers an IT management topic. The names ITIL and IT Infrastructure Library are registered trademarks of the United Kingdom's Office of Government Commerce (OGC) – now part of the Cabinet Office. Following this move, the ownership is now listed as being with HM Government rather than OGC.
