Sub geometric design methods describe contemporary approaches to solve this problem. It's not unheard-practices - such as computer animation studio Pixar is not only using this approach, but some researchers that they helped pioneer. Learn how the subdivision of work, though, and apply them in your application is the tricky part. In a valuable text book, the author tries to explain the approach and the use of this technique is valuable. Spanning eight chapters and 275 pages of text, this hardcover is divided loosely into three sections. Later sections explore the technical and practical application of subdivision for polyhedral meshes, most commonly found in computer modeling systems where subtle forms desired. This is certainly not a book for general computer programmer.
