This excellent title introduces the concept of mission-oriented sensor networks as distributed systems interact dynamically senses the network equipment to jointly execute complex real-time mission under uncertainty. It provides the latest result has not been published in major technical challenges and applications in mission-oriented sensor networks. The author of each chapter research leaders from various disciplines who are presenting their latest innovations on the issues. Shashi Phoha is Transactionsin Guest Editor of IEEE Mobile Computing, Special Issue on Mission-Oriented Sensor Networks. He is the Head of Information Science and Technology Division of ARL and Professor ofElectrical and Computer Engineering atPennsylvania State University. He has led major research program of millions of dollars for military sensor networks in industry and in academia. He joined the Computer Science and Engineering Department of Penn State in 2002 as Full Professor. He is Director of Network Research Center at Penn State. Prior to joining Penn State, Dr. He is the Director of Mobile Networking Research Department Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, where he led various projects in wireless and mobile networks. Christopher Griffin earned his Masters in Mathematics from Penn State and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. Griffin has worked as a research engineer at Penn State Applied Research Laboratory during the last six years in several DARPA and Army Research Laboratory or sponsored programs, including: Emerging Surveillance Plexus (ESP) program as a lead engineer, which was sponsored by DARPA Semantic Information Fusion program under the initiative SensIT, where he jointly developed a system for distributed target tracking and target classification algorithms to manage the development of sensors using the Level 1 fusion, as a software architect co-principal for the DARPA Joint Force Component Controller (JFACC) initiative, a program of adaptive C2 which aims to improve the Air Force response time, and he is a principal software architect for the Boeing / ARFL Infosphere Embedding Technology Insertion (IEIST) program.
