Cross-layer design seeks to enhance the capacity of wireless networks significantly through the joint optimization of several layers in the network, especially the physical access control (PHY) and medium (MAC) layer. Although there are advantages of such design in wireline networks as well, this approach is very advantageous for wireless networks because the nature (such as mobility and interference) that greatly affect the performance and design of higher layer protocols. Unique monograph is concerned with the problem of cross-layer design in wireless networks, and more specifically with the impact of node-level multiuser detection in the design.
