Stinson Cryptography: Theory and Practice is a mathematically intensive examination of cryptography, including ciphers, Data Encryption Standard (DES), public key cryptography, one-way hash function, and digital signatures. Stinson explanation of the "evidence of a zero-sum" - a process by which one person lets others know that he has a password without actually revealing any information - very good. If you're new to the math behind cryptography but want to overcome it, the author covers all the necessary background to understand the real mathematics here.
