three sections of this book deal with expensive with the basics of internetworking, network protocol suite, and a wide-area network. Internetworking (the editor Laura Chappell defines as something that ties the LAN, WAN, software, and strange devices together) effectively placed in historical perspective in the first chapter. The remaining chapters of part 1 address the OSI layer and transport data in more detail as well as basic router operation and configuration. Part of the network protocol suite is very easy, in explaining the TCP / IP, Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) and AppleTalk in the world of Cisco networking. The "Wide-Area Networking" section discusses a complex topic, but important from a WAN connection, as well as X.25 and frame relay configuration.
