Many innovative programs that power the Internet, creates operating systems, and produce software is the result of the code "open source", ie code that is freely distributed - as opposed to the secret - by those who wrote it. Leaving source code open has generated some of the most advanced developments in computer technology, including, in particular, Linux and Apache, which is a major challenge to Microsoft in the market. As Steven Weber discusses, open source success in a highly competitive industry has subverted many assumptions about how business is run, and how intellectual products are created and protected. In turn, engineers of new software code to obtain a gift, but, as Weber points out, despite the conventional wisdom that innovation is driven by the promise of individual and corporate wealth, ensuring the free distribution of code among computer programmers can empower more effective process for building intellectual products.
