This book suggests a different purpose for evolutionary algorithms in data mining: to automate the design of data mining algorithms, not only optimize the parameters. The first author offers a preliminary overview on data mining, with a focus on rule induction methods, and the evolutionary algorithm, with a focus on genetic programming. They then examine the use of conventional evolutionary algorithm to discover classification rules or related types of knowledge structure in the data, before moving on to more ambitious goal of their research, the design of new genetic programming system to automate the design of a full rule induction algorithm.
