Excellent Book
An excellent book made for those who works or just need to know everything about timing in animation (2D, 3D, CG or stop motion).
Timing, in animation, gives meaning to movement.
Animators will learn how animations should be arranged (or staged) in relation to each other, the importance of spacing, the effect of gravity and additional forces on an object, and how long each drawing should be shown (or held) for maximum impact.
Tons of Information for Beginner and Intermediate Animators (Just a Bit Over My Kid's Heads)
Both of my sons (aged 12 and 9) are into comics and want to create their own.
The publisher states on the back cover this book is for beginner to intermediate animators.
Being a novice, I had not realized this second edition is an update of an old classic that was long held as the best book out there on the topic of timing and animation.
Anyone who really wants to learn the art of comics and animated films can learn from this book.
Another comment is if you have already read through more than one other book on this topic I'm not sure how they would overlap and if this book is redundant compared to others already on the market that you've found useful and have already learned from.
I rate this book 5 stars = I Love It because it is a high quality book and is useful despite it not being dumbed down enough for kids my children's ages.
Great Reference Tool
"Timing for Animation" is an easy enough read - illustrated examples accompany small, focused sections of text covering storyboarding methods to drawing techniques used in just about any animation scenario you might come across.
Some illustrations require more study than others, mainly due to the lack of conciseness that you occasionally run into about two-thirds of the way through the book; it seems effort was focused on fitting each topic into a one or two page format, such as that used for a children's book.
This is a good book, but for those already exposed to animation techniques, some material may seem overly obvious.
